Liverpool welcomes Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday in a top four Premier League battle, with the Citizens in first place with a 15-point lead. Liverpool is fourth with 44 points, looking to fend off Arsenal and Tottenham to stay in the top four. It’s a match that’s expected to be filled with goals and has all the makings of a top game of 2018.

Daniel Sturridge, who has not featured since the Champions League victory over Spartak Moscow on December 6, was also involved in the sessions after shaking off illness and a muscle issue.

Alberto Moreno was back with the group on Thursday following an ankle lay-off, but is not likely to be involved on the weekend. Captain Jordan Henderson (hamstring) hasn’t trained yet while Nathaniel Clyne (back) is a long-term absentee.

“If nothing happens in this moment, Mo is back, he is training completely normally,” Klopp said on Friday.

“Sturridge is back in training, healthy and on the way to be fit again. Hendo is in this moment out on the pitch and is training. It looks good – he wears football boots, that is always a good sign. He was not in team training so far.

Salah, who has scored 17 goals in the league so far this season, has recovered from a groin strain and is fit to take his place in Klopp’s XI to play Man City.

Left-back Alberto Moreno could also make his return after missing all of Liverpool’s festive fixtures but Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge remain sidelined through injury.

“Hendo is back on the pitch and is training, but is not in team training so far. Alberto Moreno was in team training yesterday for the first time. Sunday might be a little early, he needs to do proper training,” said Klopp.

Liverpool are still waiting to hear from the FA after Mason Holgate accused Roberto Firmino of using racist language during last week’s FA Cup third-round tie at Anfield.

This will also be Liverpool’s first Premier League since Philippe Coutinho’s departure after the Brazilian completed a £142m move to Barcelona earlier this month.
